Field Trip - Canadian War Museum

Field Trip to the

Canadian War Museum

Grade 7: New France and the Clash of Empires
The lives and roles of various individuals at the time of the Battle of the Plains of Abraham come to life with a hands-on investigation of primary and secondary historical sources. Using dramatic events, firsthand accounts and varied perspectives on the Seven Years’ War, your students will explore the conflict that defined daily life for the people of this period, and discover how it changed Canada - and the world - forever.

Grade 8: Conflict and Confederation in British North America, 1775–1867

Students will explore how the American Revolution and the War of 1812 shaped life in Canada 200 years ago, and how these events continue to have an impact on Canada today. Through hands-on exploration of artifacts and historical documents, students will piece together the lives of Loyalist and Iroquois settlers after the American Revolution, and Canadian soldiers and civilians during the War of 1812. Students will gain a better understanding of how these and other conflicts on our soil ultimately led to Confederation in 1867.

This Week's Library Research

Dear Parents,
Assalamu Alaikum

In library class today, we worked on Information Seeking Strategies and discussed the databases that the students had chosen as one of their resources.  For next week, the students will need to complete the Print and Website Evaluation Sheets that was handed out to them today.  The two sheets are to be used as templates and used with all of their resources.

Next Wednesday, we will be looking at the third step in the research process, which is Location & Access. They need to bring all their print material with them (nonfiction books and Canadian historical magazine) that deals with their topic, "Confederation" and their Print and Website Evaluation Sheets.  Please make sure that they get the required resources.

If you have any questions or comments,  you make contact by phone or via email.

Library Research Project - Books for Wednesday

Dear Parents,
Assalamu Alaikum,

Your child is in the process of a research project in Library class.  We have tackled the first step in research (Task Definition).

This week, we are working on Information Seeking Strategies. For next Wednesday, they will need to find resources that will help them answer their questions. They will need the following: nonfiction books dealing with their topic, magazine articles found in a Canadian historical magazine, websites and databases. I have already given them a list of databases that are found at the Ottawa Public Library.  They need to circle the databases that they feel will help them in their quest to find answers to their questions.

They need to have all of their resources for next Wednesday, inshaAllah because they will evaluate and select the ones that they feel are relevant to what they are looking for.

Jazakum Allahu Khairan for your help in this matter.

Science Fair Announcement

Dear Parents,

Assalam Alaikum,

Your child has been invited to take part in the Abraar School Science Fair scheduled for Wednesday, February 20th, 2013. This exciting event encourages students to think like young scientists. In the next few weeks, your child will design a science project using the scientific method to solve a problem. In this activity, students will have the opportunity to develop skills in creative thinking, problem solving and communication (oral and written).

Your cooperation is appreciated in encouraging your child and monitoring his/her progress along the way. Your support is the key to a successful project, but please do not allow your involvement to extend any further in order to assure equity and promote student learning. Guide your child whenever and wherever you can. It is important that the final project reflects student individual effort and design. Keep in mind also that a successful project can be completed for under $15.00

Students will be given instructions and guidelines (handouts) during class time as well as help during the various stages of their projects. Although most of the work will be completed at home, students will be able to use the science lab whenever possible. For suggestions on helping your child through this process, see the website at www.free-science-fair-projects.com.

Although participating in the event is already a reward in itself, we like to offer recognition (in the form of a prize) to the top 3 students for their excellence. We would appreciate your generosity in this regard by helping us cover the cost of the prizes. If you are able to help with a financial donation, you may give it or send it to Sr. Naida or to myself.

May Allah reward all of you for your generous contributions and support!

For any question, please email me.

Jazakum Allah Kheiran for your cooperation,

Amina Ould-brahim

Until I See You - A Poem

Here is an interesting poem that someone wrote about what the Prophet means to him. Watch it and use it as inspiration as you decide on what theme to focus on for your collage art.

Enjoy.
