Updates from Tr. Nancy

Dear Parents,

Assalamu Alaikum

I hope this blog post finds you well and in good health.

For the past three weeks, during the class library visit, students from grades 7 to 9 have been developing their research skills by using ResearchReady, an online learning platform.

They were given a pre-assessment test to see where they were at concerning their research skills. The following week, we went over the results, and we started the first unit called Sources, Sources, Sources.  Each week, the students have one or two lessons to do online. I am able to monitor their progress to see if there are any gaps. The following week, we discuss the past lesson(s) and the next upcoming lesson(s).

At the end of each unit, there is a quiz. These quizzes will be marked and included in the report card.  I cannot emphasize enough the importance of doing all the lessons. All the students know that if a problem arises, I am just an email away; I will reply promptly, inshaAllah.

Research is and will continue to be part of their personal life and their academic life, so we need to give them the skills that they will need to be successful, inshaAllah.

Please note what we will be covering in the next little while, inshaAllah:

Sources, Sources, Sources: 7 lessons in this unit;
Internet 101: 11 lessons in this unit;
Website Evaluation: 13 lessons in this unit;
Conquer the Research Process: 9 lessons in this unit;
Cite it Before You Write It: 7 lessons in this unit;
Inquiring Minds Want to Know: 12 lessons in this unit.

If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Updates from Tr. Kherta

Alhamdulilah we have come to end of our first month of school. Here is a brief summary of what we have been learning so far:

In Language Arts, students have been studying the genre of Biography and Autobiography by looking at the lives of influential people. Students have read excerpts from the Autobiographies of Helen Keller and Malcolm X. We have focused most closely on the skills of "close reading" and textual analysis. Students have learned to compare author's style of writing as well as themes in order to better understand what they've read. Our first test in Language Arts will take place after the Eid Al-Adha break. More details regarding this will be posted on the blog as the test date nears, insha Allah.

In Social Studies, we have been looking at the founding of New France. Students have read about the interactions between French settlers and the First Nations people, as well as the tasks involved in establishing the new colony. Students have reviewed the skills of reading for information and asking questions to promote understanding. Our first quiz in Social Studies will be this Thursday October 10th, 2013.

Please make sure that students do not miss school during these days (Oct.1-3) and come to school on time. Please make sure that they are well rested and have a healthy breakfast before coming to school. Please send a minimum of two, well sharpened, #2 pencils and an eraser with your child during the testing days.

Popsicles Tower Project

Project Description:
Towers are impressive structures. What does it take to design a building so tall? Engineers use strong materials and innovative design to push the limits of gravity. In this project you will work in-teams to research, design, build and decorate a popsicle tower that is structurally sound. Students will design a tower as well as prepare a proposal that describes the function and purpose of their building. For example, is it a restaurant, a business complex,  or a mall? Why is this structure needed? The building structure should also be aesthetically appealing. Also, each team must prepare and present a poster board that reflects their proposal and prototype design. The teams will build their towers during the school day at times to be announced.

-          Tower must be flat on top and at the base

-          Tower must be a  straight (column) structure

-          Tower height must be between 40 cm to 60 cm.
